Women in Sudan: Two Years of Conflict, Suffering, and Strength
Two years after the civil war in Sudan began on 15 April 2023, the country is facing the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. More than 12 million people have been displaced, over half of them women and children. Essential services such as healthcare and food supply have collapsed.
When did the Sudan conflict start and what is happening now?
Sudan has experienced conflict for many years. The current crisis began after a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. Climate disasters and past violence had already weakened the country before this new war started. Today, over 30 million people need urgent help.
How are women and girls affected by the Sudan conflict?
The war has had serious effects on women and girls. More than 5.8 million have been forced to leave their homes. Cases of gender-based violence have increased by over 280%. Many women have lost their jobs and now depend on aid, making them more vulnerable. Women also suffer from food shortages, as they usually eat last in their families. Healthcare is almost unavailable, and many cannot access clean water or safety. Despite their important roles, women have been left out of peace discussions.
How is UN Women supporting the women of Sudan?
UN Women is helping women by working with local groups to provide emergency aid, skills training, and support services. They also encourage the inclusion of women in peace talks and promote their leadership in the recovery process.
